"D Kai Wilson's 'Pictures in the dark' isn't perfect. Imperfect, gritty, deeply moving - so far, I've read it once, in one sitting, and I think its very good. As both the parent of a bipolar, and the brother of one, I'm always looking for books that explain the perspective and coping mechanisms of a bipolar.
Pictures in the dark is an interesting book - Its an imperfect view of a very serious disorder - one that she takes in her stride - and explains how to live with it in terms that I can relate to, from the outside. It would be interesting to see how others find it, living with, or suffering through the disorder.
In easy, conversational tones, its not what I expected at all. Genuine, believable, and honest, there's also an element of pain and anger, but not at herself - or the disease, but at the fact that bipolar disorder is so deeply misunderstood.
Having said THAT, its not all brilliant - I felt the chapters on suicidal impulses were...not for me. I felt that they didn't fit with the book, and will be discussing, fully, the information in there with my fifteen year old son before giving him the book.
All in all though, four stars out of five.
